Aviation snips

So named for their use in the aviation industry, aviation snips are ideal for cutting aluminium and sheet metal. Their handles are colour coded for left and right cutting. Powersnips (the mechanical version) make the job even quicker.

Drill

You need one these to drill those batten screws in and keep the roof sheeting in place. Most roofers use battery operated drills for ease of access.

Riveter

Whether powered or manual, a riveter is essential for installing flashings and joining gutters.

Silicone gun

Allows precision when sealing flashings and penetrations with silicone.

Grinder

Just tricking! Hot cuts should be avoided when cutting roof sheets, as it generates hot particles and leaves a jagged edge, leading to rapid corrosion – and more importantly, voiding the Bluescope warranty.

Spirit Level

For measuring and checking roof pitch as well as hanging gutters to ensure correct drainage.

Hammer

Used to remove existing fixings and screws and knocking out damaged battens where required.

String Line

Used to ensure that fixings are installed in a straight, consistent line that doesn’t miss the battens underneath.

Circular saw

Although it’s more common to install metal battens, in the instance timber battens are being used, this will make quick work of cutting them to size.

Ladder
