A Clear Solution – Translucent Roofing Sheets

Information on two different types of translucent roofing sheets and their application in residential and commercial environments.

Translucent sheeting

If you’re looking for a hard-wearing, weather resistant roofing material that also lets you make the most of our great Australian sunshine and light, it might be time to look at translucent roof sheeting! Homeowners and industrial property owners alike take advantage of the distinctive qualities of translucent sheeting. It’s perfect for protecting outdoor living areas from the harsh Aussie weather while also allowing you to soak up that sun – without the burn, of course!

Material options

There are two main materials when it comes to translucent sheeting: polycarbonate and fibreglass. So what’s the difference?

The most obvious difference is that polycarbonate roofing panels are made from translucent polymer plastic, whereas fibreglass roof panels are resin-coated, fibre-reinforced polyester. The fibre is what gives fibreglass sheets a slightly more opaque look, but it still lets in ample light!

Where it’s used

The second main difference is in their application; polycarbonate roof sheets are generally used in domestic applications (for example, in gazebos or patios – see Figure 1 below), while fibreglass sheets are most commonly installed in industrial and commercial environments (for example, as ‘skylights’ in warehouses, sporting complexes, shopping centres, etc. – see Figure 2 below).

Profiles & Colours

Both polycarbonate and fibreglass sheets come in a variety of profiles and grades. However, standard polycarbonate sheeting has a greater range of colours available. This makes it the perfect choice when trying to match colour schemes for your residential project.

Special Technologies

Many brands offer products beyond their standard range that incorporate special technologies to increase their heat and UV reflection, impact and durability properties, so if you have a particular concern or application in mind, don’t hesitate to let your roofer know!
